What is the Meaning of the Proverb, "The Lord Laughs at Those Who Laugh at Him"

Expert Author Carey Kinsolving

"This verse means you can make fun of God, but he will laugh right back at you," says Elizabeth, 10. "It says next that he is gentle and kind when you are not proud."
Another translation of this Proverb reads, "Surely He (God) scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34).
"God doesn't like people when they laugh at him," says Meredith, 6. "He gets mad. When they are not proud, God loves them."
You can be sure God is not amused when he laughs at a mocker. This is the laughter of a heavyweight champion of the world in response to taunting from a child who wants to fight. You don't want to hear this laughter. It may be your last memory before the lights go out.
Like the child who can't imagine the power of the champ's right hook, so the scornful remain arrogantly ignorant of God's power. The proud mocker's laughter returns to haunt him as illustrated in another Proverb: "Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him" (Proverbs 26:27).
The image of a stone rolling back over the one who meant it to roll on an unsuspecting traveler reminds me of the "Roadrunner" cartoon series. The most ingenious traps keep backfiring on the supposedly wily coyote.
The Book of Esther tells the classic story of a man who became the victim of his own scheme. So great was the hatred of a man named Haman for a righteous Jew named Mordecai that he plotted to destroy all the Jews in the Persian Empire. So certain that his plot would succeed, he built a gallows for Mordecai. Guess who hung on the gallows?
"The Lord does not bless and laughs at the ones who don't believe in him and say he is stupid," says Shelby, 11. "They are stupid to laugh at God because he is real and very powerful. God loves and blesses those who believe and love him."
There's a tendency among the arrogant to interpret God's longsuffering as weakness. The Apostle Peter wrote that God is "longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (II Peter 3:9). Imagine how everyone must have mocked Noah for building the ark. Noah warned, but only his family listened.
The mockery that Jesus endured during his trials and crucifixion is a source of never-ending amazement to me. Here is the Son of God, who could have summoned legions of angels to fight for him, enduring jeers and blows without one word or act of retaliation. Instead, he cried out on the cross, "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do" (Luke 23:34).
"The Lord laughs at those who laugh at him, but he is kind to those who are not proud means that God loves both of them," says Landon, 11. "Although God loves both, he weeps for those who are lost who might laugh at him. But he smiles at those who love him and are his children."
Think about this: God is never threatened by our arrogance.
Memorize this truth: "Surely He scorns the scornful, but gives grace to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34).
Questions to consider: Is God laughing at your arrogance and weeping over the consequences of the destructive road you've chosen? Or, is he smiling because you've humbled yourself to accept the grace of forgiveness Jesus purchased on the cross? Can you smile today because you know the joy of living in the light of his love?

You can throw in a cute diversion to a boring public speaking engagement by attributing a saying to an ancient Chinese philosopher. Since these sayings are not attributed to anyone in particular, feel free to change or update them to fit your situation and to enhance their humor.
(The term 'original' here means as original as something can be after being recited and translated for several hundred years.)

Update: You cannot prevent the birds of sadness from flying over your head, but you can prevent them from pooping on your Gucci blazer.

Today's Proverb - As Autumn Approaches, Cloudy Weather Comes Along With Rain - Not in Sardinia

25°C (77°F) in October... No, you are not in Tunisia, nor in the Caribs...Will you guess it? I speak about Europe, more exactly about the second largest island of the Mediterranean: Sardinia. Sea, sun and relax for you when your workmates will remain in their daily routine. Who could ask for more? So, why don't you plan a holiday in Sardinia for this Autumn?
Do you need other reasons to be totally convinced by a trip to Sardinia? Come on!
As August ends, high season prices just go away till next July. So, in September, October and November, you will be able to find cosy accommodations at an amazingly low price. Just think about it, about the Sun, the Sea and all can offer Sardinia. Will you sent a postcard to your mates from Villasimius (South of Sardinia) or from Palau (North of Sardinia)? But, please, don't lose time as best offers will finish soon enough.
Be sure that Sardinia has always something to offer, no matter if we are in May, July or October. True is the fact that some hotels or residences close as the season finishes, that is to say at mid-october, but be quiet, the more important remain open all year long. The same occurs for bars, there is always a place to welcome you and introduce you a typical plate or drink...Don't be afraid of arriving in a desert place...It won't occur in Sardinia. And if there is no hotel available in the area you prefer, our team will recommend you another solution, such as to rent a flat or a holiday house in Sardinia. Concerning sport activities, the sweeter climate will allow you to do trek more comfortably as well as other sports.
Another fact to take into account: if Sardinia is always welcoming you, just know that few tourists come to spend holidays in Sardinia in autumn. So, can you imagine how unforgettable is the sensation of being the only one sunbathing in a tremendous beach? If you can't, just have a look on photos taken in the white sand beaches of Chia, Pula, Villasimius or in the Costa Smeralda. And now, do you see what I mean?
My last advice: have a click on sweet-sardinia.com and come to book your holiday house, B&B or shotel in Sardinia!
Update : Holiday houses in Isola Rossa at the amazing price of 110€/week in October (+fees)
Hope to see you soon in Sardinia,

The Chinese Have a Proverb Related to Time Management

Expert Author Angie Spiteri

"Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in eliminating the nonessentials"
What do you think? Is it a virtue to be busy? Do you guilty and frustrated when you leave things undone. This is extremely common and if it sounds like you then please do read on..
My husband often asks me if it has to be done right this second... and some of the time he is right it's doesn't... it's very easy to be like a little mouse on a treadmill - running with all your might but not really getting anywhere.
Years ago when I used to work for a very large organisation carrying HOURS of flexi credit, it dawned on me that I could work 24 hours and there would still be more in my in tray and in box.
I think we need to say to ourselves MORE OFTEN "I'm just going to leave this till tomorrow and go home to play with my kids' OR whatever fits for you. If you left work on time most days wouldn't you feel better about work?
I know some days you have to stay longer BUT for a lot of people this is everyday.
What habits have you got yourself into and does staying at work longer really get you ahead or give you better results? Maybe recovering some wasted time during the day especially first thing in the morning might be better??

Paper and Clutter Organization - An Old Chinese Proverb

Expert Author Liz Davenport

In a novel I was reading recently about a Feng Shui detective in Hong Kong, the Feng Shui Master walked into a client's very messy office. There were piles of very dusty papers everywhere. The Master said to the client "There are two types of people. Those who put their papers in files and put the files in cabinets, and those who put their papers into piles." The client asked "Which is better, the one who files or the one who piles?" The Master replied "The one who throws things away."
As a professional organizer, I am always amazed at people's resistance to throwing things away. When most folks have a new piece of paper in their hand they ask themselves "Where should I put this?" I, on the other hand, ask "How can I get rid of this?" Since we have created more written information in the past 30 years then had been created in the previous 5,000 years, we need to think differently about paper. Our goal should not be elaborate, detailed filing systems but instead clean, Zen-like, empty spaces that contain only what we ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NEED.
Of all the things you keep, even if you are very discriminating, studies show you will only refer back to about 5% of them (1 in 20), and that is if you keep ONLY the right things. If you keep everything (like some folks I know) you will only refer back to about.05% or 1 in 2,000. That means you will file, pile or otherwise bury yourself under the 99.95% of things you will NEVER use. We fear the "what if I need it and don't have it" scenario. We never consider the "what if I save it and never use it" scenario. Human beings are amazingly inventive. If you need something you threw away, you'll come up with another solution. Remember, the disorganized aren't really disorganized. What they really are is creative geniuses with a whole lot of stuff in which they see a whole lot of possibilities. My advice is to rely on your creative genius more and the dusty piles of useless stuff less! Remember, if you don't know where something is or you can't find it, it's the same as not having it, isn't it?
Think about it. When you have something new in your hand there are only a very few uses for it. One, it may be something that belongs in a client/project/subject file. If it is, put it there! Two, it may be something you need to do now or later, therefore you either do it now or write in your calendar when you will do it and put the paper where you will find it when you need it. Three, it needs to go to someone else/someplace else, so get it out of here. Or four, and this is by far the largest category, it is TRASH! THROW IT AWAY! No, you won't pick it back up later and read it, not matter HOW interesting it looks. No, you won't maybe need it for something later but you don't know what just now. No you won't get around to taking up that interesting hobby/project/wild hare when you have the time. It is TRASH! THROW IT AWAY!
So, when you first have that new something in your hand ask "How can I get rid of this?" It will keep you from surrounding yourself with 1999 things you'll never use! If you are not saying at least once a week "Darn, I wish I hadn't thrown THAT away" then you aren't throwing enough away!
Become the wise man who is "The one who throws things away."

What Is Your Interpretation of the Proverb, A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss?

Expert Author Shaw Funami

This is a controversial proverb. Generally it means that the people who change their occupations often do not obtain a particular professional skill. The other interpretation is that people who pursue new challenges never get old and dull, but stay young and fresh. We have never known a proverb that has such different interpretations. The Japanese version of this proverb, in its negative form, is same as the English version. Most likely, the Japanese version was translated from the original English. The version with a positive meaning in Japanese is, "When the stream of a river is fast, the water does not go bad."
Hanako was a dreamer. She had many dreams. She wanted to be a window decorator. She hoped to have a job in a Web creation business. Sometimes she thought simply marrying a person whom she loved would not be a bad idea. She graduated from college and started working as a secretary for an executive in an electronics company. She liked her job, but she could not give up her dream of having a creative job. To this end, she attended design school after work.
Hanako had a friend named Minori. She did not consider herself clever. After finishing her study of English literature, Minori continued to study English, and became an English-Japanese translator. Her translation speed was not fast, but she worked with attention to detail and made few mistakes. She did not take more work than she could handle, but for the jobs she did take, her translations were detailed and thorough. She gradually became popular. She began getting offers for jobs in the academic translation field.
As a one of the leading professionals of the age, Minori was interviewed by a TV program. Hanako watched Minori receive VIP treatment in the program and envied her. Hanako had been unable to get a creative job. She had changed her job several times. She found herself lacking professionalism in many things. Well, she thought, if nothing works, I will find a partner and marry him.
Minori did not look very pretty on TV. She was wearing a dark-colored suit like a man would wear. Her suit was dark gray and did not match her shirt. Her hair was not well styled; it was just tied back on her head. Hanako thought herself more attractive than Minori.
Which woman do you find more attractive? The bottom line is that everybody is different and everybody is attractive, as long as they live their lives to the full extent.

The Proverb Piece Number 1 - Commit Your Works, Proverbs 16:3

Expert Author Terre Ritchie

"Commit your works to the LORD and your thoughts will be established."
Most times I think this verse is taken backward-we think about something and then do the works. But here the Lord is telling us to DO the works and then our thoughts will be guided or established afterward.
Let's talk about this. If you had the choice to step out in faith, what would it actually take for you to lead out in that first step? Would you have to have all your proverbial ducks in order, the last jot and tittle marked, and the entire process planned step by step? I have to tell you that I am not this person.
When the LORD lays something on my heart to do, I will most likely step up and do it now, not later. It is through this process that I have learned how to place complete trust in God. Some have equated it to stepping out of an airplane door 50,000 feet up and knowing beyond a doubt that your parachute is going to open. That's me. If I am sure God has placed the work in my head to begin with then why wouldn't He help me accomplish it? Maybe that's why people think of me as the oddball. I have no fear of failure!
As I look at my life in retrospect, I can see how this commitment has helped me focus more on God. I truly believe if we are as close as we can get to Him through reading His Word and through prayer that He will direct our thoughts to do His works. Don't let that work of kindness, that telephone call you need to make, or that job you need to do for someone pass by as a fleeting thought. If you're living your faith-life as you should, God might have placed that thought in your head for a reason. Step out, do it now...without fear! HE will provide the blessing and your thoughts will be established on Him!

An Old Proverb for Investing

Expert Author Al Thomas

"If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there."
This very much applies to the your retirement plans especially if you are investing in the stock market. The proverb clearly states you need to know where you are going and how to get there. Right now, do you know how much money you are going to need to retire in the style you wish and, right now, do you have a plan to get that money put away?

Unfortunately, most people don't. Many are saving, but with no plan. Are you one of those who let his broker or financial planner do the investing for you? I sure hope not. When I owned my brokerage company I can tell you about 1% of these "experts" know how to make money. My definition of a broker is one who makes you broker.

Brokers will talk circles around you with all the usual Wall Street smoke and mirrors. Their two great myths are "Buy and Hold" and "Dollar Cost Averaging", both of which don't work very well. And then they will mesmerize you with "Research" which is the greatest waste of time I can think of. Brokers are not taught how to make money and they don't even realize it. Their training is designed to keep the brokerage house from being sued. Brokers have been good students, but badly taught.

Let me prove that to you. If research was so good then why isn't every broker rich? He has access to more information than you will ever be able to get. The big wire houses subscribe to tons of information. Brokers seem to confuse information with money-making. Information is of no value at all if you can't turn it into the purchase of a stock or mutual fund that is going up.

I maintain you don't need to know anything about a stock or mutual fund. All you need to do is look at a chart of a particular equity and if it is going up at a 30-degree angle over the long term (last 3 months), then buy it. When it quits going up, sell it and find another one. Brokers will tell you this is too simplistic and won't work. As I said they have been badly taught.

If you are not happy with the returns on your investment portfolio you will want to reanalyze your goal. Set an amount. Change direction. Get on a better road to achieve that goal.

You cannot rely on someone else to do it for you. It is not their money, it is yours. No one will take the interest in that you do. Just do it!

Al Thomas' book, "If It Doesn't Go Up, Don't Buy It!" has helped thousands of people make money and keep their profits with his simple 2-step method. Read the first chapter at http://www.mutualfundmagic.com and discover why he's the man that Wall Street does not want you to know.

Proverb 31 Woman Lives On in the 21st Century

Expert Author Eunice Coughlin

Have you ever read about the Proverbs 31 woman and wondered "When did this woman ever sleep?" She was a stay at home mom whose family's needs were her primary tasks (although she did her fair amount of delegating). But in addition to her regular duties, she had her own home-based fashion business and sold real estate on the side! I don't know what her husband did but he sure was a lucky man.
Her family was evidence of all the "good seed" she had sown over the years. Her husband was admired in the city and her children loved her and called her blessed. If they were not prospering, they would not be calling her blessed.
Not only did she care for her family, she cared about the people who worked for her and also for the "poor and needy". She was always ready with an offering whenever she was called on to give.
So many people put the Proverbs 31 woman up on a pedestal as if it is an unattainable goal. But 21st century women are capable of having a prosperous family and business life, just the same way as the Proverb 31 woman did.
TO BEGIN, let's call her the Proverb 31 21st century woman. She's a stay at home mom who works from home. She walks by faith and has a healthy fear of the Lord. Fear is defined in this context as "the disposition and attitude of one whose circumstances are guided by trust in God, through the indwelling Spirit of God." (Vine's Expository Dictionary, 1985).
The Proverb 31 21st century woman hands everything over to God. She takes the Word literally when it says "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." 2 Peter 5:7. She knows that she can trust her husband, her children, her job, her happiness, and her life over to Him. So she does, every day when she spends time in prayer and in His presence.
As a result of having reverential fear of God and trust in Him, a Proverb 31 21st century woman now has the favor of God to do anything she puts her hand to. God gives her the power to create wealth and the grace to accomplish all that her heart desires. He gives her the wisdom she needs to plan and solve problems and provides the resources to get it done.
The Proverb 31 21st century woman is not just found in the history books. She's not a figment of someone's imagination. Look around; she lives and breaths and works right here in our midst.
Eunice Coughlin is the founder of http://www.healthy-living-for-moms.com, a resource for moms of all ages and stages who seek spiritual and physical health and wellness. Find out more about the Proverb 31 21st century woman at http:[http://www.healthy-living-for-moms.com/Proverb31woman.html]

Chinese Proverbs

Nearly every society boasts of a high-quality collection of proverbs which denote life experiences along with the materialistic and intellectual depths of that culture. Humans are humans and by and large our understanding of the universe differs between every individual. Indisputably, each culture is one of a kind in a number of ways, and proverbs offer us a window to see the difference and the similarity between various cultures. Chinese proverbs could easily be termed as a living history as they unite the distant past with the present. They present a window through which Chinese people have traditionally and even presently view and understand their lives.

These proverbs are admired for their simplicity and wisdom, and the simple sheer number of them. You might derive a sense of gratification by going through this ancient heritage and will equally recognize the significance of these sayings. Chinese proverbs have the ability to take you back to the traditional Chinese way of life. With a 4,000-year record of civilization and culture, the Chinese have produced countless proverbs and you will find a proverb for almost any modern-day situation. In China, the well thought-out use of Chinese proverbs in writing is regarded as a symbol of higher learning and knowledge rather than a general knowledge of folklore or cliches.

A number of these proverbs and simply profound, having been crafted with the purpose of alleviating the sometimes unconventional thoughts and myths which permeated Chinese society at the time. These proverbs provide insight and tidbits of wisdom about Chinese society. Structurally, all proverbs can be further grouped into established phrases, proverbial sayings, admired sayings and two-part symbolic sayings. These are all incomparable to each other in the Chinese language, and are all vibrant with metaphors and layered meanings. Whilst most Chinese proverbs consist of only a few characters (words), when joined together they represent a tremendous amount of cultural depth, history and backstory.

An example of a Chinese proverb translated into English is: "A single ant may wipe out an entire dam, and be only afraid of standing still rather than to work slowly" which symbolizes at a surface level the power of every single individual in this universe. The proverb "Behind an able man, there are always other able men" signifies that being a leader will inspire others to follow. "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without one" shows that man is a rational creature. "Better a good deed done close to home than a journey far away to burn incense" shows that people should be modest and stay away from pompous displays of fluff. "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness" sums up the Chinese Confucian philosophy to life - do something to alleviate your idleness, don't just complain about it.

Proverb Piece Number 5 - A Sharing Machine

Expert Author Terre Ritchie

"Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will also cry himself and not be heard."
Proverbs 21:13
I've known some pretty stingy people in my lifetime. You couldn't wring a dollar bill out of them if you tried. They're the kind of people that never pay when you go out to lunch together. They scrimp and save for heaven knows what all their lives and they wouldn't buy a box of Girl Scout cookies if it meant somebody else would get something out of it. I call that a pretty selfish life.
Can you imagine what it would be like to get to the end of your life and realize that all you've done in accumulating wealth all those years... amounted to nothing? No purpose was accomplished; no good came from it at all except to benefit you. If you're thinking, "Well, what's so bad about that?" then I suggest you read on a little farther to see exactly why it's so bad.
God did not make us to stay cocooned in our own worlds and accumulate things. He gave and gives to us so that we will show His love through becoming a sharing machine! We should not be giving just what's left over to the poor, but what they need.
Think about this for a moment. When we donate to Goodwill, most of the time we give old stuff that we've used and are trying to discard. But what would happen if... just if... we called Goodwill and asked them what they needed most and then went to our closets and gave exactly what they needed? Whoa! That's a new thought!
The above verse also says that the selfish person "will also cry himself and not be heard." Someone who is selfish often finds herself alone at the end of her life with no one who really cares about her. She calls the grocery clerk or the bank teller her best friend when she barely knows them. It's so sad to see someone this lonely. When she is old she cries out for help but no one is listening.
Let me suggest this one thing to you. While you're able, with what you're able... give not only stuff, but also give of yourself to others. Be a friend. Enjoy what God blessed you with while you are alive. If you see a need, meet it to the best of your ability. If you have a chance to share with a family poorer than you, find out what they need and go get it for them. People will be drawn to you like a magnet when they see your true heart of unselfishness as you answer the cries of the poor.

The Proverb Piece Number 2 - The Generous Eye, Proverbs 22:9

Expert Author Terre Ritchie

"He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor."
Have you been looking around lately? There are all kinds of ways out there to bless people's socks off! But, I know, sometimes it's easier to divert our eyes from what needs to be done. Especially if it means we have to open up our wallets and purses! Wow, God's asking me to give money? Now wait a minute.
In Matthew West's song My Own Little World, he uses these words: "What if there's a bigger picture? What if I'm missing out? What if there's a greater purpose that I could be living right now!"
What great questions to ask yourself. What is that bigger picture or purpose God might have for you right now? Could it be that you need to turn a generous eye toward someone you've been ignoring whether or not on purpose? That homeless person, that invitation to an event to raise money for a worthy cause or that office worker in need needs you to turn your eyes on them. You need to actually see the need with a direct look, not a passing glance. Dip into your pockets and begin to experience the blessings of giving.
This verse says God will bless that person who has a generous eye. Don't you want to be blessed by God? Do you know what that means? It doesn't just mean God will bless you a little. It means God has a whole bunch of blessings He's just waiting to give to those who see a need and meet it!
And just what could those blessing be, you ask? Have you ever been on a mission's trip or gone to help a needy family and had a small child reach up and give you the biggest hug ever as their way of saying thank you? It's an amazing experience. It makes you want to get down on your knees and say, "Why don't I do this every day?" It makes you want to drop all your money on the table along with your leather shoes and new spring jacket and say, "Take this! It's yours! What else do you need?" Now, THAT's a blessing!
So open up your eyes today and see if there's a way you can bless someone's socks off. You just might be surprised how much YOU are blessed in the process.

Proverb De Papa

Expert Author Paul R Roy

Sailing has brought so many wonderful people into my life. Now to set this up I met the author of this Proverb, Brian on a sailing trip last spring from Boston to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Brian and I share a mutual friend who I have the up most respect for. Our mutual friend Bill is the type of friend who would drive 100 miles in a snow storm to help you out of what trouble you found yourself in. Because Brian was a friend of Bill's there was a transferred credibility of his character. Through out the passage to Nova Scotia I got to know Brian as we shared the same watch shift. His knowledge of business, true interest in the well-being of others was only eclipsed by his love of family.
It was just this morning that I was trading emails with Brian and of course we were looking at boats. Through the process of the communication I mentioned my trip to cross the Atlantic Ocean this year. I shot him the link to my article "Missed Goal Becomes An Amazing Adventure" I had written about the trip. Brian took that moment to read a couple other of my articles. Lucky for us that he sent along this proverb for me to read. Brian had sent this Proverb to his own grown children. I can attest that if you live life by this Proverb you will live a life filled with joy and sense of accomplishment.
From my friend Brian to his children....

Here are some thoughts that helped me be positive and focused.
I had written them on a small piece of paper and placed in my wallet.

2)Do everything with Passion and Enthusiasm.....(if you don't then you are wasting your time)
3)Never allow a Bad Experience to Em-Bitter you.......(eat it up and drive on...looking in the rear view mirror is a waste of time.)
4)Be compassionate but never allow someone Else's Misery invade you.
5)When you point a finger remember there are three coming back at you....(it is your fault, if you make a mistake, do not blame others......do your homework thoroughly before making any decisions, don't be pressured into making quick decisions.)
6) It is the Important People that are Important as they set the level of the bar.
However, it is the Unimportant People who are the Most Important people because they create the Culture and Karma.

End Brian's Letter to his Children..
Wow Wow Wow. If there was only these 7 lines to model your life the world would be a better place for all. Thank you Brian for letting me share your "Proverb De Papa". If your wondering why the De instead of Of is used it is that Brian's Children were raised in French however all have a mastery of French and English.
To my good fortune these morsels of a living a better life keep coming my way. They help me stay on my course to live a life filled with meaning and purpose. I am blessed to have friends old and new who hold them selves to such levels of humanity and sharing in life.
